Media [un]Workshop '08

LBJ School's Gary Chapman delivered a keynote presentation at the People-Powered Media [un]Workshop on Nov. 8. He spoke about the Obama administration's transition team and focused specifically on the technology and science agenda. He also discussed a new term "i-government" and efforts at greater transparency in government at all levels.

His talk will air on iconmedia's Austin News Real program this evening, Nov. 13, at 6:00 PM on Austin cable channel 10 (channelAustin).

Here is the schedule for the day:

10:00am - 10:30am — Registration. Coffee and refreshments are served.
10:30am - 12:00pm — Morning sessions. Three half-hour sessions.
12:00pm - 1:00pm — Lunch. Lunch will be on your own.
1:00pm - 3:00pm — Afternoon sessions. Four half-hour sessions.
3:00pm - 3:45pm — Keynote session, led by Gary Chapman, Director of the 21st Century Project at the LBJ School, University Texas at Austin.
3:45pm - 5:00pm — Reception. Refreshments are served.

Gary Chapman, director of the 21st Century Project at the LBJ School, University Texas at Austin will be a keynote presenter at the [un]workshop.

Gary has authored numerous articles on science and technology policy, including a 200 page report entitled "The 21st Century Project: Setting a New Course for Science and Technology Policy," coauthored with Joel Yudken. He also writes a biweekly syndicated newspaper column on technology for the Los Angeles Times; the column, "Digital Nation," is published in many newspapers around the world. He is also a columnist on technology issues for the Austin American-Statesman and Texas Monthly magazine.

The "People-Powered Media [un]Workshop" is based on the UnConference model, sometimes described as a "user-generated conference".

Here's how that works: the organizers facilitate the location, goodies, snacks, sponsors, etc. On the day of the event the doors are opened and whoever shows up is who is presenting topics. Anyone can present. The event is conversational and interactive.

People-Powered Media [un]Workshop set for Nov. 8

Austin, TX – A People-Powered Media [un]Workshop, hosted by the Greater Austin Community Media Action Group, will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at the Ruiz Branch of the Austin Public Library, located at 1600 Grove Blvd. The event is free and the community is invited to participate.

The [un]Workshop, scheduled from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, is an "unconference" created to explore community media and how it can be a tool for information, organization, and action. In the morning, attendees will generate the agenda, the sessions and the discussion. This "unconference" format is borrowed from the BarCamp model popular within the tech community.
